DNoonan : FatFrank & Racism

Search
The 1st time I took my wife, she's latina and I'm caucasian, home to visit my family in Alabama around 1974-5 before we were married I faced racism first hand... No, not from my family members!

We went to a McDonalds and were waiting in line to order a burger... This white guy walked up and stood close to us but he wasnt in line just sorta on the side. When we reached the counter he handed the clerk, without saying a word, a small card with "Please do not serve this inter-racial couple" written on it.

Have you ever seen a latina go off? You dont want to! She dog cussed that poor guy so hard all the while I was holding her back... the manager called the police.

A black cop showed up but of course the coward and his two butt buddies outside were long gone.

The cop wrote a report and we ate a meal free on the house from the manager.

The part that amazes me most is not that them there Alabamans are racist ... i'm surprised that there feller was literate

I have to admit... That sorta thing played a part in why we settled in SoCal...

Things have really changed in Alabama tho, for the good.

Thread locked, copy moved to RR.

Found a great band Sat night going through the net, "Girls Guitar Club".

They do a song about Los Angeles that starts out

"The built this city
they built it shitty
Full of smog and whores".

And goes on to talk about a resturant owned by Speilburg in the Century mall that was called "Dive" and went broke because it made submarine noises while you ate.

Link to web page. Song is MP3, called "Lizard Men". Link to MP3 here.

Peep-

that's funny sh*t, man

you don't like LA? I used to ride my bike through traffic and kicked the rear view mirrors and front emblems off cars that honked at me. I have put down some mean door dents with those cycling cleats, man. LA can be fun, good beach/bike path to ride down for some <eye candy>

Frank - Thanks for posting your story. I would have had a tough time not trying to knock that guys teeth out. My girlfriend is creole (mix of black, french, native american and white from Lousiana) and I am causcasion.

She gets comments from black guys about dating & living with a white guy. I get in fights when people I know think she is Latina and start dropping slurs about blacks around me, thinking I won't care.

Old views take a long time to change. Unfortunately I think racism will be an issue for generations to come.

Hammy, never lived in LA, just found the town confusing during a couple of visits.

Sort of a collection of nothings....
